Sweet Sorrow | Tiger Blue | Memphis News and Events | Memphis Flyer — As a two-year stretch of unprecedented success nears completion, the University of Memphis football program will all but certainly lose its two biggest stars. Head coach Justin Fuente is bound for Virginia Tech, the news finally made official Sunday afternoon.

Tigers 63, SMU 0 — For a second straight season, the Memphis Tigers are 9-3 and bowl-bound. And, as of this writing at least, Justin Fuente remains the Tiger head coach. Throughout the U of M's blowout of the Mustangs at a rain-soaked (and near-empty) Liberty Bowl, social media swelled with speculation (and a few unsourced announcements) that Fuente has agreed to take the head job at Virginia Tech.

Thanks - Memphis Magazine - November 2008 - Memphis — In this month Americans dedicate to giving thanks, we'd all do well to feel (if not express) some gratitude for what we see in the mirror. This has nothing to do with how blue your eyes might be, or that rich chestnut color of your hair, but with the very fact you have someone looking back at you.

15 Thoughts on Tiger Football — My favorite cheers every year on Senior Day are for the names we don't often hear (if at all) over the Liberty Bowl's p.a. system. These are the student-athletes who have put in the time on the practice field, in the weight room, in film sessions . . .

UT-Arlington 68, Tigers 64 — A positive review of Monday night's basketball game at FedExForum would begin with a description of stifling defense on the part of the home team, tight enough to hold the visiting Mavericks of UT-Arlington to 33-percent shooting and a dreadful 18-percent (5 for 28) from three-point range.

Window to our World — With the launch Tuesday of, Memphians - and Bostonians, San Franciscans, Parisians, you name it - will have a single web site where they can discover details normally found only in the deepest recesses of the Googleverse (and via myriad Internet portals).

Frank Gives Thanks — I have so much to be thankful for; not quite enough room on the Internet. But I can start with a column on blessings from the world of sports. * I'm grateful for the annual Martin Luther King Day game at FedExForum. It's astonishing to me that this game isn't televised nationally on ABC (or at least ESPN).

Tigers 83, Grambling State 65 — Forty-eight hours after taking the country's 8th-ranked team to the wire, Memphis slogged through 20 minutes against one of the weakest teams on its schedule before pulling away after halftime. Incorporating a full-court press defense shortly before halftime, the U of M created a pace of play that proved uncomfortable for Grambling.

Three Thoughts on Tiger Football — With the program's newfound success, the Tigers - and their fan base - will have to learn how to process something new: costly defeat. It's hard to imagine more riding on a single kicked football than the one lifted toward the goalpost by the U of M's Jake Elliott with 19 seconds left in last Saturday's game at Houston.

#8 Oklahoma 84, Tigers 78 — There can be value in exceeding expectations. Few among the crowd of 12,688 at FedExForum Tuesday expected a team built largely around an 18-year-old freshman (the Tigers' Dedric Lawson) to compete with a Final Four contender built around a preseason All-America (the Sooners' Buddy Hield).

More likely: NFL Panthers 16-0 or NBA Warriors 29-0 (and thus 33-game winning streak, dating back to last regular season)?

It's not so much the hoodie, but the massive Pom-Pom on Belichick's hat that makes him look like a middle-school DC. Dress the part.
