Utah Dems will be able to include independent voters in primaries — But in his ruling issued Monday, Nuffer said that the ruling only applied to the plaintiffs in the case - the Republican and Constitution parties - and not to other parties, meaning the Democrats can still open their primaries to unaffiliated voters.

Herbert gets three names to fill state treasurer vacancy — Republican party officials picked three possible replacements for Utah State Treasurer Richard Ellis on Saturday, with former congressional candidate Neil Walter getting the most votes. The names of Walter and the two other candidates, David Damschen and Phil Conder, will be forwarded to Gov.

Herbert wishes he would've vetoed SB54; GOP may be in trouble — "Unfortunately, instead of uniting us all together, the change has created divisiveness with one lawsuit after another," Herbert's spokesman, Jon Cox, said Monday. "In hindsight, the governor believes the public should have voted on the Count My Vote petition to settle the issue once and for all."

RT @baseballot: Utah's Republican lieut. governor is threatening to decertify the GOP as a recognized political party. Fun!…

Utah guv's approval strong, but not tops in the nation

Utah elections boss says candidates can gather signatures to get on the ballot — Cox said in a letter to Evans that the GOP boss' reading is incorrect, would "render the entire statute meaningless," and would go against what the Legislature intended to do in passing SB54. "As such, I must, and intend to, allow candidates in a qualified political party the opportunity to chose between the convention system, gathering signatures or both," Cox wrote.

Judge's ruling may leave independent voters out in the cold — U.S. District Judge David Nuffer sided with the Utah Republican Party that the party should be able to choose to close its primaries, striking a provision of a recently passed election overhaul that would have forced the party to let any registered voter cast a ballot.

Most Utah GOP House members push for hold on Syrian refugees — President Barack Obama has said the United States would accept 10,000 Syrian refugees over the next year. Thirty governors have said in the wake of the Paris attacks that they will not accept the refugees within their borders. It appears that at least one of the attackers used a Syrian passport to enter France.

Herbert makes monumental shift — He reiterated his viewpoint on a Facebook post that same day, where he said he would never support a monument in Utah "unless it has the support of locally elected officials and the rural communities impacted." Herbert's spokesman, Jon Cox, said the governor was not changing his position.

RT @SLTribPolitics: Herbert shifts his stance, says no new monuments in Utah #utpol

Top Utah officials recommend review of caps on state liability — State law limits the government's liability in injury cases at $703,000 - it has been adjusted upward over time - but gives the Legislature the ability to award more in special circumstances, although that is rarely done.

Herbert open to new So. Utah monument as part of broader compromise — Herbert would not commit to supporting the proposal put forward by the Bears Ears Inter-tribal Coalition. But he said he would consider a slightly smaller, 1.6-million-acre proposal. "It is a little bit smaller, but it's where they've got some consensus," Herbert said.
