Work ahead on the long road to realistic casting — It's just a small clip in a trailer for a comedy, but Benedict Cumberbatch's cameo as an apparent transgender model, All, in Zoolander 2 has stirred up an angry social media protest for alleged transphobia. With growing public awareness and news stories about transgender people, an online petition to boycott the film had gathered 10,000 signatures by Tuesday morning, saying the "cartoonish mockery...

Samira Ahmed: Our treasured values may not be the ones our daughters want — For years my mother kept an entire cupboard where she used to save up things for my trousseau, the old-fashioned concept of a bride's personal belongings collected to take to her new life.

Samira Ahmed talks Bay City Rollers: the band that represent an innocence lost — Three ageing rockers are holding up big glasses of milk in a toast. There's always something poignant about seeing how teen stars have aged but the Bay City Rollers really were angelic-faced teeny boppers, and I am stung by a feeling of something darker when I see the image all over news websites announcing their (partial) reunion.

Newsround, racism and me — There is a story I tell journalism students about how I got my first break and award at the age of 10. I wrote a letter to Newsround in 1978 when it had seven million viewers.

Samira Ahmed: Most refugees are men - we should be asking why — One of the strange realisations of being on the Channel 4 series It Was Alright in the 1970s was, when they showed me clips, how much I'd blanked from my memory. Star Maidens? I LOVED that TV show (pictured).

Samira Ahmed: By indulging our book fetish we’re ignoring the looming threat — I went to a fancy middle-class holiday camp the other week. You know the ones. It was fabulous. We did fencing, crossbows, rode Segways and swam every day in a giant subtropical paradise dome like we were living in a 1970s future world of wholesomeness.

Did Dickens invent time travel? — "As the words were spoken, they passed through the wall, and stood upon an open country road, with fields on either hand. The city had entirely vanished. Not a vestige of it was to be seen. The darkness and the mist had vanished with it, for it was a clear, cold, winter day, with snow upon the ground."

Samira Ahmed: "Being booted off Celebrity Masterchef was a relief" — I look at the slightly charred chapati in the palm of my hand. It should fold like a soft cloth. Instead, it cracks into black shards. I feel myself being sucked down a black tunnel of shame. My mother might be watching this. Or worse, all her friends.

I just uploaded "Samira Ahmed Celebrity Masterchef 2015. Samira Ahmed Experimenting at home." to @Vimeo:

How to survive Celebrity MasterChef: Heat four with Samira Ahmed — I was great at school exams so I guess it feels a bit like that. Except it's all one giant chemistry practical combined with a theatrical performance. The boys are super seriously competitive. That's freaking me out. I'm used to being top of the class.
