SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- A former president who lost his bid to be re-elected in the Dominican Republic issued a scathing denunciation Tuesday of the country's electoral process but made no mention of any plans to challenge the outcome.Hipolito Mejia told cheering supporters that the results of Sunday's election did not reflect the will of the people. "They are the product of manipulation and an abuse of power," he said in a brief speech.Mejia did not concede, but he didn't say he would seek a recount. Nor did he call for supporters of the Democratic Revolutionary Party to protest the outcome, though police and soldiers were on stand-by in the Caribbean country just in case. The governing party's winning candidate, Danilo Medina, a 60-year-old ... Continue reading →
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Dominicans formed orderly lines at voting stations across the country Sunday as they chose a new president from a field that includes a brash former president whose last term ended with an economic crisis and a favored technocrat from a ruling party that has spent the past eight years on a public works spending spree. There were no major problems reported though several people told The Associated Press that backers of ruling party candidate Danilo Medina were offering people payments of about $15 to vote for their candidate or to withhold their vote for his opponent. Medina campaign organizers denied the allegations, which have circulated in the country for weeks.Medina is hoping to succeed President Leonel Fernandez, who spent billions on ... Continue reading →
A former president whose term ended with the worst economic crisis in the modern history of the Dominican Republic will seek to make a comeback Sunday as he faces an old rival in a race to lead the Caribbean's top tourist destination. Former President Hipolito Mejia, a gaffe-prone populist, trounced rival Danilo Medina when they ran against each other in 2000. But Mejia's four-year presidential term ended in disaster, with a banking crisis that sunk the economy and caused so much misery and scarcity that tens of thousands of people fled the country and voters cast him out of office. That record apparently continues to haunt him: Several polls ahead of Sunday's election show Medina ahead of Mejia, perhaps with enough support to surpass 50 ... Continue reading →
A former president whose single term ended with the deepest economic crisis in the modern history of the Dominican Republic is seeking redemption Sunday as he faces an old rival in what is expected to be a close election to lead the Caribbean's top tourist destination. Former President Hipolito Mejia, a gaffe-prone populist, trounced rival Danilo Medina when they last faced off in 2000. But Mejia's four-year presidential term ended in disaster, with a banking crisis that sunk the economy and caused so much misery and scarcity that tens of thousands of people fled the country and voters cast him out of office. The pair face off again in Sunday's election and several polls show ruling party-candidate Medina could win with slightly more than 50 ... Continue reading →

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A military judge is considering whether to split off one or more of the defendants and hold separate trials for five Guantanamo Bay prisoners charged in the Sept. 11 attacks, a lawyer for one of the men said Friday. The judge, Army Col. James Pohl, proposed the change in a written order in part because of the difficulty trying to schedule hearings for five defendants and multiple lawyers at the U.S. base in Cuba, said James Connell, a civilian attorney for defendant Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali. Pohl also questioned whether one trial for all five defendants would create a conflict with evidence that could help one defendant while hurting another, Connell said. The judge’s order is sealed and has ... Continue reading →
