A month shy of Blade Runner’s 30th anniversary, word has come down that Ridley Scott will direct a sequel to the groundbreaking sci-fi film, with original screenwriter Hampton Fancher in talks to develop the screenplay. News that Scott would helm a new Blade Runner movie came out a while back, but up until now it was unclear if the film would be a prequel, sequel or something else entirely. Beyond the clarity that the movie will indeed be a sequel, few details about its actual premise have been released. “The filmmakers would reveal only that the new story will take place some years after the first film concluded,” production company Alcon Entertainment said in a statement announcing the sequel to the 1982 adaptation of Philip ... Page-Turner is an elaboration of this ongoing conversation (look for some of the arguments and enthusiasms reported above in the coming weeks), building on the work of the Book Bench blog, and expanding on it. We’ll debate about books under-noticed or too much noticed, and celebrate writers we’ve returned to again and again. We’ll look to works in translation and at the politics of literary scenes beyond the English-speaking world. We’ll think about technology and the reading life. We’ll recommend and we’ll theorize. Daily essays will be the blog’s mainstay, with books as an anchor for wide-ranging cultural comment. We found a prescient mission statement in our own back pages. In the mid-nineties, Roger Angell wrote an essay called “Storyville” about how the fiction department ... Continue reading →
On October 24th last year, as the Occupy movement spread from Zuccotti Park, across the United States, and hopped the pond to London, the Telegraph ran an article under the headline: “Only one in 10 St Paul’s protesters stay overnight.” Other British papers quickly followed suit with a flurry of articles casting doubt on the protesters’ dedication to full-time occupation. “The not-so-subtle intention was pretty obviously to undermine any mainstream support,” the photographer Ben Roberts told me. “I had an idea that the tent interiors would not only reveal fascinating and intimate details about their inhabitants but also counter the myth that nobody was sleeping in them.” And so, on October 31st, from 6 P.M. until nearly midnight, Roberts photographed inside thirty tents at the ... Lady Gaga's "Simpsons" pork chop dress and her 2010 Video Music Awards meat dress.Photo: Courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation/Getty Images I don't know what the world is like without The Simpsons. That's not some cheap ploy to position myself as the biggest Simpsons fan ever; it's just the truth. Homer, Marge, Lisa, Bart, and Maggie have been an integral part of pop culture as I know it since before my spongey baby brain could even make memories. Since its inception on The Tracey Ullman show, I've seen the Simpsons world and the fashion community intersect a few times, but over the past 25 years, never before has it been quite like this. Lady Gaga's major feature guest starring in Sunday night's Season 23 ... Continue reading →
