The new mayor of Derby has said she plans to invite a child to tell a joke at the start of every city council meeting for the next year. Lisa Higginbottom, a Labour councillor for Mackworth, hopes the move will encourage young people to get involved with politics.

The parents of murdered Indian schoolgirl Aarushi Talwar have been charged with her murder. Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar, both dentists from an affluent Delhi suburb, were also charged with destruction of evidence. They deny all the charges. The murder of Aarushi and a domestic helper in 2008 shocked the country.

A record number of offenders sentenced for serious crimes had committed previous offences, according to figures for 2011. Almost 90% of those sentenced last year in England and Wales had offended before - and a third had committed or were linked to 15 or more crimes.

Nearly £2m was saved by switching off half of the street lights across Northamptonshire last year, it has been claimed. Northamptonshire County Council gave the figures in a Freedom of Information request submitted by the BBC. The Conservative-run council said it would have spent more than £4.9m on lighting this year but instead it spent £3m.

Yahoo has launched new search software which offers results as a swipeable string of webpage previews rather than a list of links. Dubbed Axis, the service is being released as an app for Apple's iPads and iPhones, and as a plug-in for web browsers. It may help Yahoo combat the declining popularity of its search tools.

Radiation levels in most of Japan are below cancer-causing levels a year after the Fukushima plant accident, a World Health Organisation (WHO) report published on Wednesday says. Two areas near the plant have relatively higher doses of radiation, but radiation levels in surrounding countries are close to normal.

Jonathan Ive - the British designer responsible for Apple's iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad - has been knighted at Buckingham Palace. Speaking to James Naughtie at the Queen's Jubilee celebration of the arts, he said he knew at the age of seven that "what I love to do is draw and make stuff".
