Toledo sees rise in income tax collection — Income tax collections for the city of Toledo through June 30 are up almost 4 percent from collections in 2013, according to the city's finance director. At the end of the second quarter, the city had collected $71.545 million, Finance Director George Sarantou said Thursday at a city council meeting.

Barry Greenblatt, founder of Barrys Bagels, dies at 65 — Barry Greenblatt, founder of Barry Bagels, has died, a spokesman for the Toledo-based bagel franchise said today. Mr. Greenblatt, 65, died on Thursday night. A native of Detroit, Mr. Greenblatt opened the first Barry Bagels as the Bagel Place in Sylvania in 1972 with partner and bagel-maker Peter Johnson.

West Toledo check-cashing business robbed — A West Toledo check-cashing business was robbed today, police said. A man went into Check 'n Go, 5200 Monroe St., at about 5:35 p.m., and robbed the store, according to initial reports. The suspect did not show a weapon, police said. The man was carrying a black backpack and an orange hat.

- Toledo Blade — A number of animals were seized from a residence at 651 South Crissey Road in western Lucas County Thursday, July 31, 2014. Officers were called to the residence on report of a neglected horse. One horse was taken from the property and the other had to be euthanized.

Detroit Tigers purchase contract of outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from Toledo Mud Hens — As a result of Detroit's trade that brought former Cy Young winner David Price to the Tigers, the team has purchased the contract of outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from the Mud Hens. Carrera will take the roster spot opened by Austin Jackson, who was traded along with pitcher Drew Smyly and minor-league infielder Willy Adames to acquire Price.
