Researchers are testing the technology by creating a hyperlocal interactive newspaper called 'Preston News' A research project led by the University of Central Lancashire is creating what it believes to be the first internet-enabled newspaper. The project, called Interactive Newsprint, plans to create a printed publication using a type of "smart" paper that responds to the human touch. The new type of publication is being designed to carry community news, according to a post on the BBC College of Journalism website. A Brockton radio station that was recently evicted from its building has paid its rent and its local programs will soon return to the airwaves, its owner said Thursday. The future of WXBR-AM (1460) had been uncertain since May 2, when the station’s on-air staff was served with a court-ordered notice to vacate the property at 60 Main St. because the landlord, Northborough Capital Partners LLC, was owed $15,000 in rent. Michael L. Metter, president of Business TalkRadio Network, said the rent has been paid and he expects the staff to return to the studio and resume WXBR’s regular programming, which includes various talk shows and broadcasts of Brockton High School sports and Brockton Rox baseball games. Radio station WFNX 101.7 FM is being sold to radio giant Clear Channel Communications Inc. Stephen M. Mindich, founder of the Phoenix Media/Communications Group, which owns the station, wrote in a memo that, "for some time it has been difficult to sustain the station -- especially since the start of the Great Recession." A sale to the Texas-based Clear Channel Communications is the second-to-least “alternative” thing that could ever happen to the Boston station WFNX. The only thing more striking would be a change to a commercial-country format, as was rumored Wednesday afternoon. But the iconic alternative-radio outlet, which introduced a generation of local teenagers to Joy Division, the Cure, and other delightfully gloomy British acts, while giving local bands like the Pixies and Throwing Muses a way to be heard, is undergoing the same wrenching transformation as other ad-supported media.
