GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario is defending his policy of reporting suspected illegal immigrants to federal authorities when they're booked into jail despite allegations that some possible domestic violence victims may end up facing deportation. He says state law does not require that authorities withhold reporting suspected illegal immigrants accused of domestic violence .The Colorado American Civil Liberties Union says it has documented three cases in the Western Slope county where women were arrested and reported to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials after calling police for help. A 2006 Colorado law requires authorities to report suspected illegal immigrants to ICE, but excludes domestic violence until after conviction.
