Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), left, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) in a scene from “The Avengers.” (Marvel) “The Avengers” is closing in on $1.2 billion in worldwide box office and has passed “The Dark Knight” to become the biggest superhero film in Hollywood history. The scale of the movie feels as big as those numbers, and one major reason for that is the work of James Chinlund, the production designer whose credits include Darren Aronofsky films “The Fountain” and “Requiem for a Dream.” The New York native has a fine arts background and studied at Cal Arts but also learned a lot in the pages of Marvel Comics. We caught up ... Continue reading →

We’ve just posted the third episode of “Hero Complex: The Show” and it’s a good one: Part 2 of our interview with Leonard Nimoy at his home has the “Star Trek” icon talking about the origins of the Vulcan salute, the satisfactions of stage work, the vagaries of typecasting and, to top it off, we even talked him into doing an impression of … William Shatner. Yes, that’s right, Nimoy’s take on Kirk’s eulogy scene from “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” You can watch it all right here, but only if you’ve already seen Part 1. If you’re just joining us, a quick explanation of who we are and what we do: I’ve been writing for the Los Angeles Times for 21 years ... Continue reading →
Harrison Ford and Karen Allen pose for a publicity photo during location shooting in Tunisia for “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” (Lucasfilm) Harrison Ford would be “delighted” to reprise the role of Indiana Jones, the actor said at a 30th anniversary screening of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Ford has played the fedora-wearing, bullwhipping character in four films, the most recurring role of his career. “Maybe a fifth, but I ain’t going to Mars,” he joked during the Q&A portion of the screening, hosted by Hero Complex’s Geoff Boucher at L.A. Live Monday evening. “Ark” director Steven Spielberg said earlier that he and George Lucas have discussed a possible fifth installment in the series. Should a script be written, Ford said, he’d be on board. ... Continue reading →
Six minutes of “The Amazing Spider-Man” will screen before “Men in Black III” in IMAX 3D theaters, Sony announced Tuesday. The Andrew Garfield-starring reboot of the Spidey film franchise has been the topic of much anticipation and criticism, with some fans looking forward to Peter Parker’s reappearance on the big screen and others defending Sam Raimi’s Tobey Maguire-starring trilogy, which wrapped up only five years ago. The new film, which hits theaters July 3, is directed by Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”), and stars Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy, Denis Leary as her father, NYPD Capt. George Stacy, and Rhys Ifans as villain Dr. Curt Connors, also known as the Lizard. The “Spider-Man” trailer, released in February, features some very un-”500 Days ... Continue reading →
