online.wsj.com — Mention "off-balance-sheet liabilities" and corporate fiascoes such as the 2008 banking crisis come to mind. But the biggest financial black hole you have never heard of affects hundreds of mostly small and medium-size companies. Deficits in "multiemployer pension plans" run by trade unions on behalf of employees from more than one company were poorly understood until a recent accounting change shed more light on them.
