Evernote co-founder Phil Libin designed Evernote to act as a second brain, one that won't forget anything. At first glance, Evernote's barren interface looks almost too simple. Its charms are so subtle you might miss the fact that it can be anything you want it to be. In the new Evernote For Dummies, David E. Y. Sarna gives tips on how to make Evernote work not only for personal documents but also for work. Its API has allowed developers to build around it and has opened up the number of applications that can help you be more productive. Creating notes is easy. It's a lot like sending an email. Each note can be kept in notebooks, so it's easier to find stuff later. But you ... Continue reading →
If there's one company I didn't expect to have massive growing pains with BYOD, it's IBM. Then again, maybe they're more of a poster child for the promise and peril of BYOD than we might have expected. More Insights Webcasts More >>White Papers More >>Reports More >> Their problems with Consumerization of IT are, in the abstract, no different from the same issue any other company has faced when they start a BYOD policy: access to potentially disruptive services; a proliferation of unwanted and unauthorized software within the organization; unclear consequences for many actions. But everything I've heard about IBM's corporate culture tells me it's a place where IBM comes first--their tools, their software, their processes, their systems, their everything. Small wonder they get antsy ... Continue reading →
Microsoft gave us a taste of the changes yet to come in Windows 8, as late last week it announced that its Aero interface, made popular in Windows Vista and continued in Windows 7, would not be in Windows 8. More Insights Webcasts More >>White Papers More >>Reports More >> You really should read the MSDN blog entry, if for no other reason than its interesting retrospective on the history of Windows. You also need to click the "talk to it" link. It depicts one of the most celebrated computer moments of the 1980's. Taken out of context--meaning at each OS release--it's hard to see the purpose behind Microsoft's Windows design decisions. But armed with the information in this blog, you'll recognize a real method ... Continue reading →

Now that Google has leapt over the last hurdle on closing the deal to buy Motorola Mobility (here's the press release), it seems timely to take a look at why this deal is happening in the first place and what might come next. Before I take that look, it is appropriate to note that I have, or at least used to have, some skin in this game. Until late last year I was a senior software manager inside of the Mobile Devices business at what we now know as Motorola Mobility. Among other things I led the product team for the Droid2 Global and the Droid RAZR products, before being downsized out of MMI at the end of last year. While I don't think my ... Continue reading →
Tuesday, May 22, 2012 12:00 PM Posted by Damian Menscher, Security Engineer Starting today we’re undertaking an effort to notify roughly half a million people whose computers or home routers are infected with a well-publicized form of malware known as DNSChanger. After successfully alerting a million users last summer to a different type of malware, we’ve replicated this method and have started showing warnings via a special message that will appear at the top of the Google search results page for users with affected devices. The Domain Name System (DNS) translates familiar web address names like google.com into a numerical address that computers use to send traffic to the right place. The DNSChanger malware modifies DNS settings to use malicious servers that point users to ... Continue reading →
