This time of year, we’re busy inviting candidates to interview with us for the editorial board’s endorsement in the Aug. 7 primary. Most candidates accept, while others decline due to schedule conflicts. Occasionally we get a candidate who, essentially, tells us where we can stick our endorsement. Here’s a colorful response we received from candidate Stephan Brodhead, a candidate for the 6th Congressional District seat being vacated by Norm Dicks. OLYMPIA, Wash. — Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna says Washington state's multi-billion dollar transportation needs could ultimately require voter-approved taxes, but his Democratic counterpart, Jay Inslee, isn't ready to support any specific financing plan.McKenna, the state's attorney general, said that "in the next couple of years," voters will need to consider a tax package to address the state's transportation system."I don't know what will be in it yet, it's too early to say," McKenna told The Associated Press. Associated Press SEATTLE (AP) - Using a fax machine and letterhead from the King County Council in April 2002, the office of then-Councilman Rob McKenna sent off an invitation to the U.S. secretary of the interior. McKenna, listed as the sender on both the fax cover page and underlying note, requested on behalf of the Washington State Republican Party that the Cabinet leader speak at the party's annual convention. It was a political memo that may have placed McKenna's office afoul of state or county ethics laws, which bar the use of government facilities for "personal convenience" and political campaigns. Education group backs McKenna for governor By Associated Press Friday, May 18, 2012 Tweet OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) -- An education advocacy group that typically supports Democrats is endorsing Republican Rob McKenna for governor. Stand for Children Washington said Friday that McKenna was incredibly aligned with the group's policy goals for students. Jennifer Vranek is a lifelong Democrat and Stand for Children board member. She admits that she struggled with the decision to back McKenna. But she was impressed with his depth of knowledge and passion about education, saying that he will be a change agent. Stand for Children previously endorsed Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire in the 2008 election.
