New Delhi: As the world braces for a probable Greek exit from the Eurozone as part of the latest development in the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis, it is prudent to take a stock of the situation and the effect it would have on India. It is only wise to be prepared for the worst after the unsavoury experience of 2008 and 2009 during which many professionals were laid off in different parts of the country though the economy was not significantly affected. The resilience of the Indian economy is very often cited by many in advocating the 'India is insulated from the Eurozone crisis' theory. In my view, that is a myopic view. The 2008-09 global meltdown was a fallout of corporate greed, malpractices and ... Continue reading →

Ho / AFP / Getty ImagesIndian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (R) speaks with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari during a meeting in New Delhi on on April 8, 2012China and India have a way of separating thorny questions of geo-politics from practical matters of trade. It’s a diplomatic strategy that, despite its obvious limitations, has helped keep border disputes at a minimum and enabled the rivals to try to maximize the economic benefits of living side by side. If there is one takeaway from President Asif Ali Zardari’s April 8 visit to India, it is that we might be seeing more of this pragmatic approach to diplomacy in the troubled realm of India-Pakistan relations. It is clear that both sides could benefit from a shift ... Continue reading →
One item in India's much anticipated new budget raised a couple of eyebrows: military spending has been increased by almost 17% to over $42 billion, up from $36 billion in 2011-12. Funds to buy new weapons and systems were also raised by 15.7%. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the hike was to meet defensive needs, but it underlined India's efforts to match the military buildup of its regional rivals primarily China. At the beginning of March, Beijing increased its defense budget by 11.2%, taking it up to $106.4 billion. India is now preparing to sign several military deals, including a $20 billion contract for 126 Rafale medium multirole combat aircraft from France. With the possible exception of military expenditures, however, the anticipation over the ... Continue reading →
New Delhi: After Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya, the West's war eyes are now firmly fixed on Iran and Syria. International reportage on the Syrian crisis has drastically changed its character over the last fortnight or so. The entire discourse on the urgency to "stop the brewing humanitarian crisis' has changed tracks. The new discourse as outlined by the West and its lackeys in West Asia and North Africa now is that the "Bashar al-Assad regime must go." As the recent conference in Tunis of the "Friends of Syria" will suggest, (never mind that the Syrian government was not invited), the West will, in all likelihood, sing the "freedom and democracy" tune. It's a tried and tested adage and has worked well for them in the ... Continue reading →
