Most Screwed Local Public School Districts Update 2009-2011

schoolfinance101.wordpress.com — Here it is - my annual update of America's most screwed school districts. This time, for stability purposes, I've used a 3-year average based on 2009-2011 data (2011 data being released earlier this week). As I've explained in my previous posts on this topic (from last year's post on screwed districts)...

Governor Corbett, Think Progress and the invisible Latinos

pontealdia.com — Yesterday the blog, Think Progress, picked up a video from our web site, and before we knew it, Salon, Philly.com, the Huffington Post, and a number of other web sites followed suit. Tax collection and foreclosure bill amended, headed for vote

planphilly.com — A bill overhauling the way the city collects delinquent property taxes was amended on the floor of City Council Thursday, and could come up for a vote as early as next week. The bill, co-sponsored by Councilmembers Bill Green and María Quiñones-Sánchez, requires the city to offer income-based payment plans to delinquent taxpayers and establishes a timeline for foreclosing on tax-delinquent properties.
Might be an open secret that Feibush will run to replace Kenyatta Johnson, but I haven't seen it reported conclusively elsewhere.

Philadelphia is Ori Feibush's World, We Just Live In It

phillymag.com — It's 10 to six on a Saturday night, and Ori Feibush and I are stick in traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike. "Don't quote my cursing," he says somewhere near Newark, berating himself for being in the wrong lane. "My mother will kick my ass for that."
This is the problem with state takeovers of local entities. Over time, state interest fades, and accountability with it.

Who’s Still Killing Philly Schools?

citypaper.net — "Our young people will suffer under a devastating bare-bones budget," Mayor Michael Nutter warned at a press conference last week. "The quality of education in Philadelphia will plummet and we will all suffer as a result: poverty, unemployment, crime, lost wages and lack of personal opportunity."
