It’s possibly one of the most popular ever memes in the history of the Internet but today it lies in tatters. The Rickroll phenomenon, whereby people are promised one thing but given “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley instead, has been ended by a copyright takedown request by AVG Technologies. It’s a brave move – Rickrolling was invented by 4chan and who knows how they’re going to react. Anyone who has spent much time online, especially on Internet message boards of any kind, will be aware of Rickrolling. It’s an incredibly simple concept. The meme is based on a bait and switch, whereby someone posts a hyperlink which allegedly provides content relevant to the current discussion, but in fact leads to the 1987 ... Continue reading →
2 min. Rosa Golijan Facebook confirmed Tuesday that it's conducting a "small test" of a new Timeline layout, which may mean another profile redesign in the near future. Carl Franzen of Talking Points Memo was among the first to notice that a new Timeline design is being tested.Franzen explains that the new layout isn't terribly different from the current Timeline design, but that it "creates subtle but noticeable changes to the top of user profiles, chiefly moving the user’s name, home location, occupation, education, and other basic information into a layer of text atop the 'cover photo,' the widescreen image that serves as the backdrop for a user’s profile."This new design adds a new "Summary" tab to user profiles. Clicking this tab leads to a ... Continue reading →
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Wedding bells will ring this summer for Marvel Comics' first openly gay hero, super speedster Northstar, and his longtime boyfriend. The New York-based publisher said Tuesday that Canadian character Jean-Paul Beaubier will marry his beau, Kyle Jinadu, in the pages of "Astonishing X-Men" No. 51. That's due out June 20. Northstar revealed he was gay in the pages of "Alpha Flight" No. 106 in 1992, one of Marvel Entertainment's first characters to do so. Since then, numerous comic book heroes and villains have been written as gay, lesbian or transgender - from DC Comics' Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, to Hulking and Wiccan in the pages of "Young Avengers." Comics, as a medium, have embraced gay, lesbian and transgender characters, including the introduction ... Continue reading →
By Bob SullivanCould you be blamed for a car crash because you sent a text message? A New Jersey judge will decide later this week if the sender of a text message might be partially liable for a horrific auto accident that occurred because the driver was reading that message on his cell phone and drifted into oncoming traffic. With nearly half a million U.S. drivers injured in distracted driving-related accidents every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the judge’s decision could have wide-ranging impact in both the legal and digital realms. While it might seem absurd to blame someone who isn't even in the car -- or anywhere near it -- for causing an accident, some legal experts say the plaintiff is on ... Posted a few minutes ago Friday, May 18th, 11:49 am. For the first time in recent memory, millions of regular people were paying attention to the moment-to-moment fluctuations of a single stock. Most of us had no idea what was really going on — not working in finance, we rarely do — but it didn't seem like Facebook's IPO was going very well. The stock had almost instantly dropped four points from its opening price, and bottomed out at the offering price: $38. Five minutes later, the stock shot back up. It flew around like a stunned bee for the rest of the day, and ended down. But back to those five minutes. Between 11:49 and 11:54, something extraordinary happened. For about 300 seconds, the ...
