Applications to some of the roughly 200-plus business "accelerators" world-wide have more than doubled in the past two years, as growing numbers of entrepreneurs seek them out for seed capital and advice. Despite a sharp rise in the overall number of accelerators, the top-ranked programs, such as Y Combinator and TechStars, say they are drawing as many as 1,500 applicants for what may be as few as a dozen spots in each session, or class. The roughly 12-week programs offer entrepreneurs seed funding and one-on-one mentoring to help develop their businesses, in exchange for an equity stake of around 6%. The classes typically end with a "demo day," in which the participants pitch their start-ups to investors. Among those eager for help is Efrem Weiss ... Continue reading →

It's not every day that Morag Stewart and Kevin Eggan plan a covert operation. But on a recent morning in Breckenridge, Colo., the pair put together a series of mysterious directions -- take the lift to the top of the mountain, look for the guy in the red jacket -- that ultimately led 80 of their friends and family to a clearing in the glades. It was a logistical nightmare, but the payoff was big: It was their wedding. Have you been to a wedding in the woods lately? Or watched a couple tie the knot in the middle of a shopping mall? A small but growing group of intrepid couples are ditching the dulce de leche cake filling and glitzy chandeliers for something a ... Continue reading →
