What was your first job as a journalist?

Sports writer at the Harrisonburg (Va.) Daily News-Record.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You have an opportunity and a responsibility to do independent, thoughtful journalism that offers insight and enrichment to your community.

YDR staffers use new video to focus on trauma journalism challenges — When I read a blog post from the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma about a new video called "Getting it Right: Ethical Reporting on Traumatized People," the words of Roger Membrey, an Australian man whose daughter had been murdered, hit me squarely: "Look, we are not a commodity.

Dart, Digital First Media Collaborate on Peer Support Program — About a year ago, the Dart Center partnered with Digital First Media and set something in motion: An effort at a company-wide peer-support program for journalists who cover stories of trauma and conflict. Last week, the York (Pa.) Daily Record/Sunday News and DFM unveiled peer-support guidelines and formally began building the program.

Trauma journalism: YDR, Digital First Media embrace peer-support effort at kickoff seminar

Dart Asia Pacific Announces 2015 Fellows — Please join us in congratulating the 2015 Dart Centre Asia Pacific Fellows, who will convene May 10-15 in Hong Kong for a week of seminars, briefings and peer-to-peer discussions. Reporting responsibly and credibly on violence and traumatic events - on street crime, family violence, natural disasters and accidents, civil unrest, war and genocide - are among the greatest challenges facing journalists around the world today.

Trauma experts help YDR, Digital First Media kick off peer support program for journalists — Thursday is a big day for us. We'll be hosting several colleagues from Digital First Media's Pennsylvania newsrooms, as well as a few of our own YDR staffers, to kick off our trauma journalism peer-support program.

Montgomery County shooting: Extraordinary story calls for focus on trauma journalism — When a Montgomery County man killed six members of his family and became the subject of a manhunt last December, Digital First Media's properties in the area put all the resources they could on the story.

YDR welcomes a new class of journalists, leaders — There's a lot of talk these days about journalism training, and how some journalists say they're not getting enough. We're trying to make sure that's not the case here. A group of our newest employees just finished YDRU, a big-picture course on the YDR's history and culture that serves to welcome new staffers, teach them, and motivate them to do great journalism and become leaders in our newsroom.

What really happens on Reading Day at York College? — On York College's academic calendar, the day after the last day of classes and before finals start (Dec. 10 this year) is called "Reading Day." That's no subtle message. But I'm thinking students might find other things to do. So I asked my media-writing class students to hit campus and find out.

A Thanksgiving tale: Why Central Pa. should make peace with glazed bacon and The New York Times — It was an unexpected gift: The New York Times, in its state-by-state breakdown of Thanksgiving recipes that "evoke each of the 50 states," chose a Pennsylvania Dutch recipe that promised to be edible: Glazed bacon. Glazed bacon. Just say it. Think about it. Think about tasting it. (Watch it're drooling.)
