David Taintor May 25, 2012, 8:07 AM David Carr, media columnist and culture reporter for The New York Times, talked recently to TPM about the future of news, the “glorious” view of the Port Authority Bus Terminal from his desk and what would happen if Twitter went dark tomorrow. What is your writing/reporting day like? Today, I spent far too much time on email and Twitter, and far too little time reporting a story I’m working on. I stayed up until 2 o’clock last night. I did sort of a personal elegiac post about Netflix, comparing it to my experience with AOL. I like to write at night. I’m kind of a vampire, and I have trouble writing in the newsroom. When I was first ... Continue reading →
Is Ben Arredondo bait, with bigger fish to come? Looks like there may be more to come in the public corruption probe that led to the indictment last week of state Rep. Ben “Show Me the Tickets” Arredondo. The Department of Justice is asking a judge to seal the evidence against the Democratic lawmaker, who to my astonishment hasn’t resigned his office. (He is, after all, oh so close to that lucrative pension we offer elected officials.) The DOJ, in a motion filed this week in federal court, says it must release to Arredondo’s lawyers “a large amount of material, much of which contains confidential and sensitive information related to other investigations,” both closed and ongoing. “If this information were to be publicly disclosed, such ... Republicans are touting a grainy video of Democrat Ron Barber passionately campaigning for passage of the health-care overhaul bill in September 2009 as evidence he has been dishonest with voters about his role in getting the Democrat-backed law approved. The GOP and Republican congressional candidate Jesse Kelly have repeatedly linked Barber to "Obamacare" in TV ads and mailers. In response, Barber has said he wasn't in office to vote on the law, and that his job as former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' district director did not include drafting bills. He has also said the law was "far from perfect," and proposed keeping good aspects while revising bad aspects. When asked during last week's KUAT debate if he would have voted for the bill if he were in Congress ... A federal court judge on Tuesday imposed a 40-year sentence on a White supremacist who was behind a 2004 bombing that seriously injured Scottsdale's diversity director. A jury found Dennis Mahon, 61, guilty in February of conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosives; malicious damage of a building by means of explosives; and distribution of information related to explosives. Dennis' twin brother, Daniel, was found not guilty of a single count: conspiracy to damage buildings and property. Dennis Mahon maintained his innocence in court moments before he was sentenced. "I didn't do this crime. I can't apologize for something I didn't do,'' he said. A pipe bomb was addressed to then-Diversity Director Don Logan, who is Black, and was delivered to his ...
