Columnist, The Allentown Lehigh Valley Morning Call
Morning Call columnist/blogger - commenting on news, judging Christmas lights, offering advice to the lovelorn and eating mass quantities of Musikfest food
blogs.mcall.com — What Is It? The Answer I thought last week's "What Is It?" item was pretty amazing, and I never would have guessed what it was used for. Imagine my surprise when several readers identified it easily. On the bright side, the first to explain the item correctly was Kathy Frederick, whose Junk Drawer blog was the inspiration for launching "What Is It?"
blogs.mcall.com — Election Day Turnout looked dismal this morning at my Lehigh County polling place. I suspect it will be the same story all over, although Northampton County Democrats and Lehigh County Republicans have some important choices before them. It's amazing to me that so few people vote in municipal primary elections.
blogs.mcall.com — Melanie Wagner-Johnson My column Saturday was about actress Angelina Jolie's decision to have both her breasts removed and the fact that my wife, a breast cancer survivor, had her remaining healthy breast and ovaries removed 11 years ago for much the same reason.
blogs.mcall.com — Movie Quote Quiz Today's Movie Quote Quiz has a bit of a twist. All the movies feature actors who appeared in one film, which is included here. Some of them appeared in a bunch of these movies, some as few as one. In a few of the movies, they played only small roles.
blogs.mcall.com — What Is It? Today's "What Is It?" item is the coolest of the batch I borrowed from the collection of Stu and Marie Lathrop of Allentown. Our photographers shot another view of it, but it contains printing that might give the game away, so I'll withhold that until the big reveal next Wednesday.
blogs.mcall.com — Hamilton Crossings The East Penn School Board voted 6-2 Monday night to participate in a proposed tax increment financing district for the Hamilton Crossings shopping center project. I think it was a terrible decision. I've supported tax incentives to bring commerce back into our urban areas, which desperately need the restored tax base and can't compete otherwise with the lure of the suburbs.
blogs.mcall.com — Grammar Police Test A few people responded to my Grammar Police column Saturday with variations on this question: "In this Saturday's column you stated that 'my sisters and me' is correct. Shouldn't it be written 'my sisters and I?'" The answer is that it would depend on the rest of the sentence.
blogs.mcall.com — Best Movie Mothers As we move into Mother's Day weekend, it seemed appropriate to construct a movie list of the 10 best movie moms. I concentrated on women whose movie roles focused mostly on them as protective/nutty/nurturing/valiant/eccentric/controlling mothers and portrayed them in the most interesting ways.
blogs.mcall.com — Mapping the Canal As I was preparing my recent column about trash and other problems along the Lehigh Canal, I consulted a website in which the canal is explored and photographed from Jim Thorpe to Easton in what is billed as a virtual tour, complete with all kinds of historical information about each section.
