1. Introduction The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), first reported in late 2019 in Wuhan (China), and its subsequent rapid and uncontrolled global spread led to an unprecedented pandemic and a monumental public health crisis. As of the latest available data, there have been over 767 million reported cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections and more than 6.9 million deaths due to COVID-19 worldwide [1].
