1 Introduction When freshwater from rivers enters the ocean, the surrounding coastal area is often referred to as a region of freshwater influence (ROFI) or river plume. These areas are important for productivity and exchange of water properties such as nutrients, pollutants, sediments and carbon between coast and offshore environments (Simpson, 1997).
