The 6 personalities on every PR team

The success of most teams is guided by different experience, breadth and depth of knowledge and creativity to achieve one goal.

Think about your current team and others you have been on. Have you ever noticed that most of your colleagues fall into a few character categories of PR professional?

Which one are you?

1. The Client Whisperer

You know people who know just what to say at just the right time? Yeah, they are Client Whisperers. No matter whether you have internal (bosses, spokespeople) or external clients, there are teammates who are just good at interacting with them, whether it’s helping to persuade them, console them, or get to root of a concern. It usually takes years of practice and these teammates are great to learn from.

Usually seen: casually leaning back during conversations, taking everything in, and  converting to personal power stance when ready to jump in.

2. The Organizer

 “So, to recap…” is a common phrase the Organizer will use. He or she will make sure that teams and projects are moving ahead and everyone is clear on roles and deliverables. This person is the backbone of the team and keeps everyone in line and on time.

Usually seen: assigning owners and developing a timeline at the end of a meeting.         

3. The Brainstormer

When you’re looking for new or creative ideas, the Brainstormer delivers. He or she can get into a room and talk about things in the news, creative concepts or mediums, and future milestones. Sometimes the ideas are bold, sometimes unachievable, but the Brainstormer will always give you something to work with.

Usually seen: Googling during meetings and sharing resources related to the ideas/concepts mentioned.   

4. The Observer

For various reasons, there is always a teammate who is observing, soaking in what they’re hearing. They’re frequently taking notes and learning from the conversation around them. While some may undervalue their participation, they see what others don’t: nonverbal cues, the common theme of ideas being discussed, or details that were mentioned--all of which are extremely valuable.

Usually seen: paying full attention and jotting down select notes.  

5. The Wildcard

Warning: wrenches will be thrown. Uncomfortable pauses may occur. The Wildcard is somewhat unpredictable and will toss out an idea or ask a question that might derail you or the conversation at hand. But their contribution is to challenge the group to think differently or even come to a conclusion in a time of indecision.

Usually seen: listening to the conversation but not taking notes; sometimes mistaken with the Observer.  

6. The Expert

When you’re working on a specific project or have a series of questions about an initiative, a platform, or a business unit, you bring in the Expert. This person has the knowledge you’re looking for to finalize a plan and execute it.

Usually seen: darting in and out of meetings all day. Is an avid user of what he/she is an expert in.

The best part is that not everyone is the same personality in every situation. By identifying and learning from people who do them well, you can learn to adapt on other teams and expand upon your skills.
