As a young professional getting ready to step out into the “real word,” I often look for opportunities to develop my understanding about the profession. When the opportunity came to not only attend, but also volunteer for the 2016 Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) National Conference, I took it.
Allison Melangton asserts the importance of thinking beyond the norm.
Even though society is highly connected, the value of being original should be implemented throughout any strategic communications endeavor. Sometimes that means investing more time in the planning process and not taking ideas at face value. By conducting research and challenging the norm, people will be receptive to a shift in their perception about a topic.

Persistence is the key when trying to land your ideal internship. Whether it’s following up with the professionals after an interview or maintaining the relationships you make -- the consistent communication will set you apart from others who don’t take that initiative.
A prevalent theme throughout the conference was the importance of authenticity.
Authenticity in this industry is being able to make those symbiotic relationships and utilize that to also have a voice. There’s a notion that one must compromise themselves in order to get ahead in the industry but communications expert David Grossman, APR, Fellow PRSA refutes that mindset.
"Respectfully authentic leaders know that relationships are about everyone except themselves," said Grossman.
That’s when it all came together for me at conference. The work public relations professionals do is not for the sole benefit of one person, but rather a collective of individuals working toward the same goal.
