Goodbye Steve Ballmer

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to retire within 12 months. Robert Evatt at Tulsa World said, “Holy crap!” Tim Peterson at Advertising Age wrote, “Microsoft CEO to retire within 12 months, announces decision month after he reorganizes the company.”

Vlad Savov also wrote up the reveal at The Verge. Casey Newton there said, “The Verge commenter army are doing some of their best GIF work in this Ballmer post.” Sarah Purewal with PC World wrote, “Who will be #Microsoft's next #CEO?”

To read the announcement straight from the CEO himself, here’s the letter on Microsoft’s website titled Moving forward. Himank Sharma at Reuters said, “Ballmer's retirement marks the end of the old guard in major tech, notwithstanding all his fallacies.” Colleague Rob Cox tweeted: “‘I look forward to continuing as one of Microsoft’s largest owners.’ Translation: don't do anything I wouldn't do.” Cecilia Kang from the Washington Post added, “Ballmer says emotional, hard choice but ‘I take this step in the best interests of the company I love.’”
