CNN has tapped Chris Frates as a DC-based correspondent for its investigative unit. Frates comes to the Turner team from the National Journal, where he is presently a national correspondent. "Pumped and honored to be joining the @CNN team. Thanks to everyone for all the good wishes. Keep sending those tips!" Frates tweeted.
Then the felicitations came pouring in. "Huge congrats to my former @politico deskmate @frates, joining @CNN as a correspondent. Well deserved!" agreed Jessica Taylor of NBC and MSNBC. Of course, occasionally the accolades came with teasing. "Oh no, I'm going to have to start eating lunch w/ @frates, who is joining @cnn as a correspondent. Frates is a great reporter & he's buying!" joked CNN's Mark Preston. "Bringing the hockey mullet to cable," Buzzfeed's Kate Nocera observed, and Politico's Glenn Thrush had the same reaction: "I knew that hair had to be on TV." Then there was this take from The Atlantic's Kevin Baron: "Great job, @frates. @CNN just got better, smarter and more rap-friendly." Rap-friendly, huh?
In the end, Frates offered this effusive tweet: "Thanks to everyone for all the good wishes today. It's been overwhelming. I'll be in touch soon with each of you individually. Thanks again!"
