New TIMENewsfeed editor pens epic farewell to tech beat
Jessica Roy is the new editor of TIMENewsfeed, the online section of TIME Magazine devoted to sharing breaking news and in-the-moment updates in an easily-digested form. Previously an editor for the New York Observer's tech blog Betabeat and a reporter on the technology beat for the Observer, it would seem Roy is perfectly suited for the job. The Verge's Adrianne Jeffries tweeted of the news, "In a total coup, @TIMENewsFeed has hired the fantastic @JessicaKRoy as its new editor."
In a noteworthy move that catalyzed conversation, however, as her last act at Betabeat Roy wrote a farewell post enticingly entitled, "Smell Ya Later, Nerds." In it, Roy enumerated the many phenomena she would not miss about the tech beat--or as journalist Alex Howard put it, "In her last post at @betabeat, @JessicaKRoy unloads on the current culture she sees in Silicon Valley." For example, we give you #2 on the list: "Guys who try to hit on you by asking if you want to try on their Google Glass." But more to the point, there's #9: "snotty mansplainers" and male readers who mock reporters for covering the issue of "women in tech."
The response from the tech journalism community was dramatic. "This is the greatest thing I’ve ever read. Leaving has never been done better. Well done and good luck @JessicaKRoy," tweeted Micah Singleton, EIC of CE: The Magazine. "Wondering why women don't stay in tech? Start w/ # 9, by @jessicakroy," Inc's editor-at-large Kimberly Weisul remarked. Finally, VentureBeat's Dylan Tweney observed, "Clearly @JessicaKRoy has studied in @paulcarr's school of farewell posts."
