Politico poaches from NYT

Rick Berke is leaving The New York Times after nearly three decades at the paper to join Politico as its executive editor.

"Will always root for NYT -- where I've been since Reagan years -- but SO excited about POLITICO adventure," Berke tweeted.

It's a loss for the Times, where he was most recently the assistant managing editor for news but started 27 years ago as a night editor in DC. Then for more than 10 years, he was their national political correspondent. A true company man.

"Congratulations to an amazing journalist and a better friend," Gwen Ifill at PBS tweeted in response to the news.

Meanwhile, at Politico: "Of all the weeks to be away from the office, I pick the one where @rickberke joins @politico and baby cheetahs visit the newsroom," bemoaned senior political reporter Alex Burns.

Baby cheetahs? Now we really can see why Berke took this job.
