Greenwald's goodbye to Guardian

Nov 04, 2013

As of this week, Glenn Greenwald has officially departed The Guardian for his new but still nameless venture with tech billionaire Pierre Omidyar.

Greenwald heralded the official transition with a farewell article and four words: "On leaving the Guardian," he remarked, prefacing this post. That tweet alone received 326 retweets and 206 favorites.

"'Leaving @guardian wasn't an easy choice' - @ggreenwald on reporting the #NSA story & his next steps," Guardian US editor Heather Long tweeted from the column.

Circa editor-in-chief Anthony De Rosa had this detail to add about the move: "@ggreenwald told @newsweek that a big reason he left The @guardian is over the Official Secrets Act."

In Greenwald's own written words: "As I leave, I really urge everyone to take note of, and stand against, what I and others have written about for years, but which is becoming increasingly more threatening: namely, a sustained and unprecedented attack on press freedoms and the news gathering process in the US. That same menacing climate is now manifest in the UK as well, as evidenced by the truly stunning warnings issued this week by British Prime Minister David Cameron ..."

In recent weeks, even while still at his post, Greenwald continued to name contributors to the project; you may recall his recent announcement on welcoming to the team journalists Liliana Segura and Daniel Froomkin, in addition to Laura Poitras and Jeremy Cahill.

Meanwhile, Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger recently offered his respectful nod via this tweet: "Sorry to be losing @ggreenwald after some thunderous reporting w @guardian. His new venture sounds +extremely+ interesting." Absolutely couldn't agree more; we look forward to the details as they emerge.
