Featured journalist: Patrick Kerkstra

Wednesday's featured newsy is Philadelphia-based journalist Patrick Kerkstra, a writer at large for Philadelphia Magazine and guest columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. No stranger to accolades, Kerkstra has received the Weiss Award for Investigative Journalism as well as Headline of the Year from the Geek Awards (an award that honors covering stories in the local geek scene). Peeking into Kerkstra's portfolio, it's clear he also has a knack for playful profiles: be sure to check out "Pat Toomey Is Surprisingly Moderate" as well as the hilariously titled "The Amazingly Boring Rise of Tom Corbett."

As for pitches, he prefers to be pitched "intelligently and by e-mail." His favorite fictional journalist: Murphy Brown. And as for his thoughts on social media? "Twitter, far and away. Facebook's melding of personal and professional creeps me out a bit. Twitter, for me at least, is all business." We hear you, Patrick.
