GMA loses Champion, promotes Zee

An emotional sendoff on ABC News this morning: Good Morning America has lost weather anchor Sam Champion to The Weather Channel, where he's been named managing editor as well as weather anchor of an untitled program to launch in 2014.

"Only an amazing opportunity like this at @weatherchannel cld take me away from my @ABC family of 25 yrs and @GMA," Champion shared on Twitter, punctuating with the hashtag #blessedlife.

"I love you, @SamChampion, as a friend and brother, and will greatly miss working with you," tweeted GMA anchor Josh Elliott. "Through happy tears, I wish you the very best...."

That means, of course, that Champion's position as GMA weather anchor and weather editor for ABC were up for grabs -- but not for long! Ginger Zee has been named his replacement.

"Couldn't be happier for @Ginger_Zee. What a great year she's having!" tweeted GMA digital reporter Eliza Murphy.
Responding to all the congratulatory tweets, Zee posted, "Thank you! I live for covering weather!"
