Featured journalist: Mike Hixenbaugh

Feb 07, 2014

We'd like to put a bow on this week by featuring Mike Hixenbaugh with the Virginian-Pilot. A military beat reporter there, Hixenbaugh covers everything from aircraft carriers to military history to the U.S. fleet forces.

When asked why he became a journalist on this beat, he replied, "I wanted to be a sports writer in college, but I didn't enjoy writing in clichés or interviewing half-naked linebackers." Prior to joining The Pilot in March 2011 to cover Virginia Beach government, he worked for three years at daily newspapers in North Carolina, where he covered stories ranging from local zoning scuffles to a suspected serial killer in rural Edgecombe County. He also won nine awards from the North Carolina Press Association during his tenures with the Rocky Mount Telegram and the Fayetteville Observer. Don't miss samplings of that award-winning work here in his portfolio!

Remember: If you also want to be featured here, you should 1) set up your own journalist portfolio 2) get verified and 3) let us know by emailing Kirsten.
