John Branch at the New York Times reported last night that College Football Star Michael Sam Says He Is Gay; May Become First Publicly Gay Player in N.F.L. Josh Eidelson at Salon tweeted this quote from Sam: “I just want to own my truth.”
Today, Jon Wertheim at Sports Illustrated followed it up with: Michael Sam, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, says he is gay. Richard Deitsch there wrote, “I just woke up in Sochi. 7:08 a.m. Mike Sam. Wow. Good for him.” Mike Suszek at Joystiq said, “This is great, can't wait for the NFL draft now!” Freelancer Cliff Corcoran called the whole thing “Brave & heroic.”

Proud of you @MikeSamFootball! #OneMizzou.” David Nelson at KWQC-TV pointed out, “Michael Sam is trending #1 on Twitter right now.” Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire added, “Proud of this young man. Wishing @MikeSamFootball the best of luck throughout his career.” And Nathan Mattise at Ars Technica shared, “Bravo @MikeSamFootball, inspiration for many. Hope the @Saints (or my Washington Prof. Football Team) pick him up.”
