Today's featured journalist is the inimitable Clare O'Connor, a staff writer at Forbes on the retail beat. Now covering the consumer economy and the big personalities reinventing retail, until recently O'Connor chased the super-rich for Forbes 400 and World's Billionaires lists. Before Forbes, she worked as a news reporter in the UK and her home country of Bermuda. In 2013, she was one of three finalists for the SPJ Deadline Club Award for best business profile after she wrote this story: "Undercover Billionaire: Sara Blakely Joins The Rich List Thanks To Spanx."
She got her start, however, interning at the Mid-Ocean News in Bermuda during her vacation breaks from college. "There was no internet on my computer," she reveals. That's why O'Connor advises aspiring journalists, "Start at a local or regional newspaper or a trade publication. You'll learn to really report rather than re-blogging or posting cute gifs." Don't miss the rest of O'Connor's excellent work here in her portfolio.
