Today's featured journalist is none other than Lauren Hockenson, a Social Media and Consumer Startups Reporter for GigaOM, that blog-related media company we all know and love first started in San Francisco. Hockenson also describes herself as "That girl at the tech thing with the hairbow." We'll take her word for it.
Hockenson's first paying job in journalism was working for her local alt weekly, Sacramento News and Review. "It was also my first successful pitch!" she reveals. As she's on the social media beat, her insight on the subject holds a good deal of weight: "Social media is moving the news cycle into hyperspeed. It forces journalists to remain alert to constantly keep up, a tremendous task," she writes. As for her favorite, funniest news-related #hashtag she's seen, Hockenson tells usm "It's morbid, but #thatcherhasdied. Once I read "That Cher Has Died," I couldn't unsee it." Be sure to check out her work here in her portfolio, starting with her Mashable offering "Engagement: The Big Word That Means Very Little."
