The Trojan Twitter

Apr 03, 2014

Today's other top story is baffling for other reasons. The Washington Post shares an Associated Press story that the US government evidently designed a Cuban version of Twitter, with the aim of using it to undermine the communist government in Cuba. Freelance journalist Adrian Chen pointed out, "The U.S. secretly created a "Cuban Twitter" to try to foment dissent in Cuba, (+ tried to get Jack Dorsey involved)."

In case you were wondering, the communication network was dubbed "ZunZuneo" after Cuban slang for a hummingbird’s sound. The Post's Michael Cavna predicted, "20 years from now, Ben Affleck will be hoisting the Oscar after directing 'ZunZuneo.'" But The New Yorker's Caitlin Kelly wondered, "what if usaid also created weird twitter?"
