In response to this weekend’s tragic shooting there, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department posted this photo of the officer who died. They captioned it: “Today is a truly tragic day for our police department, and our community.”
Related, the New York Times’s Matt Apuzzo found out that War Gear Flows to Police Departments. Jon Williams from ABC News said, “Great story: the MRAPs built for #Iraq & #Afghanistan, turning up in middle America - legacy of ‘long season of war.’” Clayton Morris from Fox News wrote, “Crime is at it's lowest level in decades. So why are police departments arming up with tanks?”
Tom Hamburger at the Washington Post turned his attention to Tom Steyer’s slow, and ongoing, conversion from fossil-fuels investor to climate activist. Arelis R. Hernandez there summed it up with, “Billionaire’s conversion to climate activist is a slow shift.” Colleague Jim Tankersley had this to share, “By what possible metric are coal/tar sands the fossil fuels ‘having a specific impact on climate’???
Elsewhere in the Post, you can read that a Virginia Democratic senator is set to resign, possibly dooming push to expand Medicaid. Zach Carter at Huffington Post tweeted, “The Virginia GOP is apparently trying to one-up Gov. Bob McDonnell on ethical outrages.” While Martin Austermuhle with WAMU wrote, “Remember when a Va. senator criticized D.C. pols for being corrupt? Yeah, about that.”
