IndyStar snares popular sports scribe

Big news on the sports journalism front, and on the newspaper front in general: beloved columnist Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports is headed to the Indianapolis Star. Doyel is a well-laureled writer, with five top-10 awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors in the past 14 years. Starting Oct. 20, he'll hold the same role at IndyStar that he's performed so well for so long: sports columnist.

"Scooped by new boss. Typical," Doyel joked, after IndyStar's official account beat him to revealing the news on Twitter.

"Wow. @GreggDoyelCBS goes to @IndyStarSports. When is last time a marquee, national sports columnist at major website returned to newspapers?" veteran sports journalist Edward (Ted) Kian wondered.

Producer David Dearing also noted, "How universally approved is the @GreggDoyelCBS signing with @IndyStar? 'Welcome to Indy' is trending, and most of those tweets are to him."

"I'm a big believer in 'thank you,' but there are too many to thank individually. But thank you. Reading them all, with chills. And smiling," Doyel concluded. A scan of his mentions, and you'll get happy chills, too!
