Reuters media critic Jack Shafer is out

Nov 20, 2014

Media critic Jack Shafer announced last night that he is leaving Reuters after being let go along with possibly 55 others. As for Shafer's next destination, it's anybody's guess, but it's safe to say there won't be a dearth of offers.

"Many thanks to all @Reuters for 3-plus heavenly years. As Stanley Kubrick once said, 'The only problem is, what to do next,'" Shafer tweeted by way of announcement.

Regarding the immediate future, however, Shafer tells Capital New York, "This was news to me in the early part of this week, and I don’t really have any plans. I got a book review assignment today, but that was from somebody who didn’t even know that I’d been laid off from Reuters, so my next plans, I think, are to read a book and write a review."

"Finally, @jackshafer is free to pursue his true calling as a beat reporter for the Montreal Alouettes. Jack, I warmed up the poutine for you," journalist Craig Silverman consoles him.
