LA Times adds #BlackTwitter reporter

As you may have noticed was heralded in today's Muck Rack Daily, the LA Times just hired a reporter to cover "Black Twitter"--so please offer a warm #MediaTwitter welcome to Dexter Thomas. In his own words, here's Thomas on his new job and background: "Black Twitter is a mix of different things ... Not everyone who follow Black Twitter is black. Just like in the past, a lot of activism happening today has people who have covered these same issues and served as a bridge between larger media outlets and the activists, and many of them have been Asian-American. It’s important to explore the fragments of those who are telling the stories. I’m interested in what blacks, Asians and Latinos are doing offline with this."

"#BlackTwitter is now a beat at @latimes and @dexdigi is our man on the job," announces data producer Ben Welsh.

"Shout out to @dexdigi for being the first in the country (correction: world) to cover #BlackTwitter for a major," reacts Zenith Media's Michael J. Miraflor.

There's been some brouhaha on Twitter as to precisely what gives a journalist the chops to report on #BlackTwitter, but as Jamil Smith with The New Republic points out, "I hear that, and that is a concern for this #BlackTwitter beat. But @dexdigi is one hell of a writer."

It would be an understatement to say that we look forward to what Thomas has to teach us on this subject.
