LA Times snares Sasha Frere-Jones

Sasha Frere-Jones has landed at the Los Angeles Times after exiting his role as Genius executive editor to "work on other projects." Joining the LA Times as a cultural critic at large, Frere-Jones is charged with starting a digital entertainment vertical. Prior to Genius, Frere-Jones was a music writer and contributing editor to The New Yorker.

The timeless East vs. Best Coast debate had to be invoked, of course.

"How the west has won: Sasha Frere-Jones to join @latimes as cultural critic," crows LAT's S. Mitra Kalita.

Daniela Galarza with Eater chimes in, "another great new yorker moves west/SEES THE LIGHT."

Meanwhile, Jonathan Shainin at the Guardian notes, "@SFJ to LAT, a newspaper frankly long overdue for a Stereolab collaboration."
