MTV News hires TNR's Jamil Smith

MTV News has hired The New Republic senior editor Jamil Smith to be its senior national correspondent. Smith's hiring marks the latest of MTV's efforts to build a diverse staff of rising writers, critics and journalists from "outside the music space" to dissect everything from "the next Ferguson to the next Formation."

"I have some personal news, folks. I'm leaving @NewRepublic to join @MTVNews as a Senior National Correspondent," Smith tweets, sharing this Variety post, later continuing, "I'm thrilled to join @fierman and my new colleagues at the new @MTVNews. Read @mlcalderone on what we'll be doing."

Smith begins on Monday, starting in New York but eventually relocating to Los Angeles.

The network also announced the addition of Erica Futterman as New York bureau chief. Futterman most recently acted as managing editor of Refinery29.

"It's gonna be awesmazing. So stoked to join this team!" Futterman shares.
