Updates at Bangor Daily News, AP; Poynter announces new president

Lori Valigra, who has been a senior reporter at MaineBiz for the past four years, is joining the Bangor Daily News’ Portland bureau. Her work has been published by The Boston Globe, The Christian Science Monitor, Reuters, United Press International, The Asian Wall Street Journal and Science magazine, among others.

James Asher has been named a news editor in the Associated Press’s Washington bureau. The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist is the former DC Bureau Chief for the McClatchy Co.

And the Poynter Institute has announced that Neil Brown, the editor and vice president of The Tampa Bay Times, will be its new president. Brown started at The Tampa Bay Times (then the St. Petersburg Times) as world editor in 1993, ultimately becoming the paper’s editor in 2010.
