Biography

I've been involved in media for more than 40 years, with my biggest claim to fame centering on the conceptualizing, editing and, to a large extent, writing a best-selling book on South African history.
The [Reader's Digest Illustrated History of South Africa: the Real Story] sold almost a quarter million copies in South Africa and more than 40,000 copies in other parts of the world.

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first job as a journalist was to spend a Saturday afternoon at a place called Clover Crescent, in Athlone, to report on hockey.

Why did you become a journalist?

I thought that social conscience and excellent writing would make an excellent combination - and, for me, it has.
