mountvernonnews.com — MOUNT VERNON — The excitement surrounding the Mount Vernon boys basketball team’s run through the Division I tournament hasn’t been this high since 1993. The Yellow Jackets have won three straight in the tournament, knocking off top-seeded Pickerington North, and advancing to the district finals this Saturday where they will play Reynoldsburg at Ohio Dominican College at 5 p.m. The run is similar to one put on by that team 25 years ago.
mountvernonnews.com — HILLIARD — For one, it’s a chance at a bit of redemption. For the other, it’s a chance to make his own mark. Mount Vernon’s Ashton Spurgeon and Max Van Fossen both qualified for the Division I State wrestling tournament after placing in the top four at the district meet Saturday at Hilliard Darby. “It feels good. It’s awesome (having two qualify for state),” said Mount Vernon coach John Frye. Spurgeon (195 pounds), who finished second at districts, is back in the state tournament for the second year.
mountvernonnews.com — COLUMBUS — The state bowling tournament is not the time to have an off day. Centerburg’s Colton Hogg found that out the hard way, finishing with a 482 series in the Division II State Bowling tournament Friday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. “It wasn’t so good. I couldn’t figure out the oil pattern,” Hogg said. “I just couldn’t get the ball where I wanted it.”“It was a little tough with the lane conditions. There was no back end, just a puddle of oil,” said Centerburg coach Matt Climer.
