@Noahpinion This, in my opinion, is one of the better questions to be asking right now. I've even done some note taking on this, under the title The Rest of Our Lives. So right now, it's enough to merely get this question out there.
5/ It's only 2018 and on a macro level--generation on one side of the balance sheet and batteries on the other--we're much farther along than expected just 24-36 months ago. Wind or Solar + Storage is already a thing. And we're only on the front edge of that trend.
4/ Note how @mims nicely brackets the proximate gains to come in batteries, both in price and capacity. These gains, incremental and steady, are more that sufficient to create systemic gains in the energy system--once paired with the deflation coming from generation.
3/ When I talk to professionals in the space, who talk fluently about the range of services that batteries can provide to the system, in many cases, the mere introduction of batteries can solve problems and provide value.
2/ So consider the next round of efficiency gains in batteries, ably covered by @mims today, at the @WSJ. Note the coming gains are not radical, but they don't need to be.
