@s_sullivan That's useful. Maybe the diversity of life experience argument works better for appellate judges?
Like isn't some diversity of life experience on the bench a good thing? If he was smart enough to be commissioner of the FEC, why isn't he smart enough to be a federal judge?
I'm the opposite of an expert on this sort of thing. But I don't totally understand why a district court judge needs to have hyper-specialized procedural knowledge on day one.
What's weird about this story is that the guy isn't some jerk who's been selling hot dogs since he passed the bar. He was an FEC commissioner.
