Irish playwright Marina Carr returns to Chicago with Marble

My first exposure to Irish playwright Marina Carr was back in 1998, when I was living in San Francisco. The Magic Theatre produced a festival of plays by contemporary Irish women, including Marie Jones’s tragicomedy Stones in His Pockets, which went on to several regional productions in the U.S. But the show that resonated the deepest with me was Carr’s By the Bog of Cats, a retelling of Medea as the story of a contemporary Irishwoman in the Midlands named Hester Swane.

In the Continuum connects the stories of two women living with HIV

It’s been nearly 20 years since I saw In the Continuum in its 2007 local premiere at the Goodman Theatre. But the 2005 Obie Award–winning play by Nikkole Salter and Danai Gurira (performed by the playwrights when I saw it) has been having a moment locally all over again. Pegasus Theatre Chicago produced it in May, and now Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre presents another revival under the hand of producing artistic director Tim Rhoze.

An Intervention brings a personal dimension to a political falling-out

British playwright Mike Bartlett’s 2014 two-hander, An Intervention, is a good choice for the inaugural production of Heart of Gold Theatre. Bartlett, perhaps best known to Chicago audiences for his play King Charles III (written before the longest-serving Prince of Wales finally ascended the throne, and produced at Chicago Shakespeare Theater in 2016), has left royalty behind in this exploration of friendship through the lens of geopolitics. Or is that geopolitics through the lens of friendship?
