So not only did they organize to fix those things for good, they acted to address those injustices in the present. In so doing, they helped their communities AND highlighted the need for structural changes.

As a side note - the Black Panthers get a bad rap, but they were an inspiring and pathbreaking organization that modern thinkers ignore at their own peril.

That’s just one story! One story! Reading about SNCC and the Black Panthers and SDS was inspirational to me too. We have such rich history. We should learn from it and take from it.

With these cooperatives, regular people decided that if a big monopolist wouldn’t extend this new technology to them, they would extend the technology themselves. And they did just that.

Right now I’m reading this history of communications in the US, and I’m just so excited and inspired by the rural, nonprofit cooperatives who extended the telephone to so many farms.
