When visiting the Rhône, hotels are just one option when it comes to accommodation – there are plenty of other choices, including guesthouses, gîtes, campsites… even treehouses. Or why not stay at a winery? Many estates have cottages or converted barns in the grounds. You can even find rooms in some ancient chateaux. Nothing beats waking up to birdsong among the vines.

When you’re in the Rhône Valley surrounded by wineries, why on earth would you want to visit a wine shop?! In fact, there are many reasons. Some estates don’t accept visitors or might be closed when you want to call in. At a wine shop (caviste in French) you can buy mixed cases, including bottles from multiple producers, rather than buying lots all from one domaine.

The Rhône is famously one of the best value wine regions on the planet, and when drinking in situ, bottles are even more affordable – mark-ups at much lower than in New York or London. If there is one grumble, however, when eating out in the Rhône, it’s the paucity of wines served by the glass. Even in bistros that really understand wine, you might only find a couple of reds, whites and rosés to choose from, and they’re rarely the most exciting.
